In the month of January, I had 145 student absences in my classes. Out of 145 absences, I think that only three students came to me to ask what work they missed. If a student is absent, it is his or her responsibility to read any chapters they might have missed in class, to get any notes from their peers, and to turn in any work that they have missed. With the amount of absences in just one month alone, it is nearly impossible for me to keep track of what students need to make up work. Therefore, if they don’t check the homework blog and make up the work within three days of the absence, I will record a zero for their grade.
I have noticed that the highest number of absences occurs on Fridays. Fridays are NOT optional. We will have in-class assignments every Friday. Students who miss are still responsible for their work.
Attendance is an essential component to a student’s academic success. Often, the number of days that students are absent accumulate without parents realizing how many days have been missed. Please encourage your kids and stress the importance of showing up.
